The Second Sunday After Pentecost
(Readings: Genesis 18.1-15; Psalm 116.1-2, 11-18; Romans 5.1-11; Matthew 9.35-10.8)
This Sunday our gospel reading points to a surprising motive for Jesus’ mission: compassion. Within the heart that perfectly reflected God there was an emotional response to the plight of humanity. A gut-level love for people that fuelled his teaching, preaching, and healing ministry.
After a compact description of the things Jesus did, our passage moves into an invitation for the disciples to take the same message he did into the world: ‘The kingdom of God has come near’. He also asks them to fulfil it as he did: ‘cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons.’ Another invitation to follow. Put simply, the church we are invited to love the world as Jesus did.
May you find the faith, gift, and courage to go through this world as Jesus did.
All are welcome to our services this Sunday at both St Barnabas from 9:00am and St Michael’s from 11:00am.
